KKKBy William Benjamin

Clear Waters is a small town in the heart of Mississippi State. Last census count was 2.778 fellows. Pretty small, isn’t it? No wonder why everyone knows each other, and it is simple to notice outsiders on the spot. Some families have been here for 3 or 4 generations! Jimmy and I are friends, just like our parents were friends before, and our grandparents had been friends before that. This is a regular town where regular people spend their regular lives. Only one issue, there are no kids.

People rarely visit our town. Some local families have relatives who live in nearby towns, and they sometimes come for a few days. It is not usual that a person who does not live here, come and stay for long. Outsiders, the way we call people who are not from around, never stay for more than two days.Being said this, I hope you understand how puzzled all of us were when the Hamptons showed up.

At first, they seemed to be normal. The odd thing, they were fair-skinned. People with such a physical trait visiting a dark-skinned-fellow community? Unusual, but we did not care too much. They acted as typical outsiders. However, things got weird on the 3rdday of their staying here. They left their room at the hotel and occupied an abandoned house in town. That was really odd!

The Hamptons soon became the talk of the town. Many people wanted to know about them. However, since they moved, they had kept secluded. What a mystery! Clear Waters does not have a police department, it is not necessary. Years ago the neighbors had agreed to take care of each other. So, there was no one but the neighbors themselves who could find out about the Hamptons.

Kids have passed in front of the Hamptons’ house many times while playing. They report to have heard strange sounds coming from inside. They have also seen Mr. Hampton working in the garden. That is normal, but kids say that he was wearing a white robe or cloak. Pretty odd and, alarming! The issue of the white cloak reminded us of a monster we thought had died decades ago.

There was an emergency gathering in the church on Sunday. Most of the neighbors attended because they were scared and worried at the same time. When the Pastor heard the kids’ story, he said that there were no doubts, the KKK had returned. The sermon that day was related to God having created all of us as equal, we were all children of God and, we have to treat others the same way we would like to be treated. After that meeting, everybody was expectant, but at ease. Unfortunately, some events that were about to happen, would alter the peace in town again.

Since the Hamptons had stayed secluded, people did not worry about them for a while. Eventually, we just forgot the existence of these 10 new members of our community. A big mistake! We should not have forgotten about them. If we had just kept them in our minds! If we had inquired a little bit more, we would have prevented what happened on December 1st. That is a day we will not forget in our entire lives. Well, the remaining of us. That day, corpses began to appear.

The Hamptons acted silently and fast, as we later realized. They had everything planned beforehand. That is why they had kept secluded, to plan everything carefully. Late at night, they broke into families’ houses and kidnapped our kids. Then, the corpses of the kids were found hanging from trees. One of the first victims was my cousin Moses. He wanted to be a doctor, the best ever. That was his dream. Lord, I miss him so much! Everyday new corpses were found. It was a massacre!

It was impossible for us to catch the Hamptons. The last owner of that house converted it into a real fortress! Besides, there was no legal way to make them responsible of the deaths. There were no witnesses. We knew they were guilty, but our hands were tied up. Eventually, all the kids in town were dead. The future of our ghetto was gone. There was a lot of crying and mourning. The KKK had succeeded. The only reason why I survived is that I was a little older than the rest. They would not have been able to subdue me that easy.

I organized a group of twenty strong men from town and, we approached to the Hamptons house. Nobody was there, and the entrance was opened. After the Hamptons committed their sin, they left. However, before they did, they revealed themselves as the murderers by leaving a white cloak and a note in which they confessed their atrocities. There was a meeting at the church the following Sunday led by the Pastor. He had two sons and a daughter who were victims too. I was the one who found the note, so Pastor told me to read it out loud to the congregation.

We, the Hamptons, are the descendants from former KKK members. We believe that people of your kind do not deserve to live in our country. This lands belong to us, fair-skinned people. You, are a mistake of God. You should have never existed. We came in here to end this abomination. However, we noticed you are strong, we are no match for the adults of the community. For that reason, we decided to eliminate your children, your future. Eventually, all the adults will die and, Clear Waters will cease to exit. Dying is your fate.

We were shocked at the content of the note. Racism at end of the twentieth century? Unbelievable, and worrying! That day we learned a lesson that we would never forget. Some monsters act like cockroaches. They make you believe they are dead, but if you are careless enough, they will come back and strike!
