I’ll Drink to That

I don’t watch the news on TV.  I quit watching yesterday.  Why, you ask?  Because I don’t want to become a drunkard, that’s why.  The news isn’t really news, it’s sound bites, sensationalized to do what?  Make everyone edgy, on alert, ready for action?

I read the newspaper every morning.  Ok, not the printed paper but the same paper presented online.  It has the same news as the evening TV news, perhaps on a day delay which may not be a bad idea.  Do I really need to know minute by minute how many people have died in every country?  The total numbers are enough, more than enough.  Reading the newspaper gives me the control of what I read and when I read it, TV news doesn’t do that except for having control of the off switch.  I need control of how much I see and how sensationalized each headline is presented.  I elect to stay with the news from yesterday and digest it in the smaller chunks that reading provides.

So why the title of “I’ll Drink to That” for this essay? Why?  Because I’ll drink to that has become my way of coping with the world of madness.  I went to the grocery store two days ago for a few items that we needed.  No, I didn’t go for TP or hand sanitizer.  I went for basics, milk, bread, veggies, eggs.  I picked up two jugs of water as well.  At the checkout, I was told that I could not buy the water since it was rationed.  No restriction on the six-pack of beer I had, only on the water.  Same with all the bottles of wine, whiskey, rum, vodka or gin that I could load into my cart.  So, I’ll drink to that.

Wow, just knowing that no matter what, I can always just drink to that makes all of this much easier to deal with.  My liver may not agree but, I’ll drink to that also.  So, when I get up in the morning and know that nothing I would normally do can be done, I’ll drink to that.  If the house needs to be cleaned but I would rather read a book, I’ll drink to that.  What about the laundry, I’ll drink to that also?  This could become a new way to deal with… EVERYTHING.  I’ll drink to that.
