Teacher's reflection about her journey

Essay
“My Journey: A story to tell, to inspire”

May I have to summon your critical attention my friends as I’ll share to you my educational perspective and experiences being a teacher, researcher and mentor.
The desire for boundless learning and commitment to service keeps my momentum as I constantly journey the life and works of being a teacher and researcher. This is where I anchored my goals and visions for a successful and productive teaching. Strive for excellence and opportunities are endless. For 20 years in teaching profession, the adversities and struggles cannot the joys, fulfilment and achievements that have come along the way.
My passion for research and strong inclination for scientific knowledge advancement has paved the way for students to discover their potentials, unleash their creativity and create things on their own through conducting science investigatory projects. Scientific research has been so hard and time/effort- demanding, yet it is the most rewarding and fulfilling tasks for both teacher and student. As a science teacher and project adviser, I designed and implemented an intervention program that would help the students and address their difficulties in the conduct of the study. A mentoring-buddy program and online linkages are found to be very effective. The students who participated in the program have really improved their research skills, finished their research projects and came out as winners in the science fair competitions from the division level even up to national level. Consistent achievements in winning various science fairs are emerging manifesto that aspirations and goals are bound to be achieved. Showing commitment and perseverance is an essential element of modelling not only to students as well as to other teachers. This is why the mentoring program extends to teachers also to inspire and motivate them to engage in research. For several years, I have organized and facilitated trainings for teachers on how to conduct science investigatory projects.
The tasks of being a research adviser have been so challenging despite of the lack of funds and facilities. It is worth and gratifying moment seeing my students representing the country in the International level competition. Such experience has changed their perspective in life. They have travelled abroad, met scientists and talked to brilliant people. The doors of opportunities were opened that enabled them to pursue college with scholarships. It is very fulfilling to know that one of them will soon to be a doctor and renowned student researcher in their university. These passion, commitment and dedication are part and parcel of the good education achievements of my students as well the school.
Beyond achievements and objectives to enhance the learners’ scientific knowledge and technological skills, scientific attitudes and values also matter most. As students’ curiosity and interest in science are cultivated, their awareness and love for nature are also nurtured. I inspired and guide them to conduct science research that has something to do with environment. A number of biodiversity studies have been conducted to provide awareness to residents, local government unit and implementing agencies that protection and conservation on the natural ecosystem like mangrove, seas, river, watershed will be undertaken to sustain their structure and function. Studies on the development of device that will alleviate problems on mosquito-related diseases like dengue and malaria which are prevalent in the locality have gained award as the best project in the national science fair. Students have also developed gadget like flood-monitoring device that is very potential and useful in monitoring local hydrological conditions considering that the city is flood-prone area.
The prospect for research is indeed limitless. My experience and excitement with my students during community immersion to climb mountain and explore the culture /practices of an indigenous tribe is very valuable and significant. Ethnomedicinal studies have been conducted and it is remarkable to know that plant utilization is entwined with the rich cultural practices among Higa-onon tribe. In such, it is necessary to promote awareness among these people and ethnic groups that biodiversity protection is essential to conserve ethnomedicinal knowledge.
Scientific research does not end on writing final paper. Findings have to be reported and shared to the community. On this ground, I have organized and coordinated a School-based Science Research Congress for students in the Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) program. This activity provides opportunity for students to share their works and disseminate findings through exhibit and oral presentation. There are already four batches of graduates who successfully presented their research works in the congress. The rest of the students in the school can witness their displays and exhibit, ask questions and even share ideas. It is also participated by their parents, stakeholders and even students from other schools. It is presented as one of the best practices of the school during the Division and Regional Summit and has gained significant remarks and feedbacks.
The need to create an effective learning environment is indispensable tasks of being a classroom teacher. This will increase learning potential and sustain students’ motivation to learn and set high standard. I have developed and implemented learning module, study guides and differentiated activities to ensure quality of learning. I have also employed strategies like inquiry-discovery approach, active learning, metacognition and higher thinking skills. It is a reality that educational materials are insufficient in the classroom but this constraint prompts me to be more creative and resourceful by designing indigenous instructional materials that are appropriate to the needs of my students. As evident to this, several awards for classroom structuring, model classrooms and IM’s implementer are received.
As a teacher, I have to be informed about trends and new developments in my field and keep abreast with the knowledge and skills needed for effective teaching. This gives me an impetus to continue my doctorate degree in science education.  I always think how to be more competent and effective. That is why I continuously seek for attendance in a seminar, trainings, scientific conference and forum where I can also present my research works in the regional level, national level and even outside the country.
I believe that every learner deserves a world-class and quality education. That is why I always encourage students to strive for excellence and demonstrate exemplary performance without pressures and is accompanied with self-decision to enjoy life and their youthfulness. I always reach out to them and have fun to get through their hearts and minds for me to fully understand their needs. I reflect my strengths and weakness on my students’ performance every day for this will give me opportunity to grow as a person. When work sometimes can be frustrating, I draw out strengths and hope from my students thinking that I was once like them holding dreams and goals in life that can only be achieved with the guidance of a teacher. The pedagogy of teaching is essential to learning. But going back to one of the basic goals of teaching profession which is to shape the behaviour of students is deemed necessary for this will lead them to live a meaningful life in the future.
Certificates, plaques and commendations received may describe my journey, but my utmost fulfilment lies on the influence I have made on the lives of my students. Hearing their achievements and success in their respective endeavors may lighten up every day’s load of works and struggles. My passion for teaching is deeply embedded on my students who long for knowledge. My love for learning is a great force, driving my continued pursuit of pedagogical and content knowledge.
As I continue my journey, much works have to be done. More changes/innovations are required in the light and life of teaching. In this way, learning opportunities are shared in every learner that will make them succeed extra ordinarily in the global arena.
I am hopeful and confident that I will remain dedicated and committed to my work because of the love and support of my family, children, friends and colleagues who go out in their own way to help me achieve my desires and aspirations. I am prepared to bring my passion to whatever opportunities may come in the future. Showing students how to love learning is my great story to tell.
