A Journey to Gurudongmar Lake

With the cold breeze biting right into us and our teeth chattering, we looked at the lake with our eyes wide open.  Gurudongmar Lake.

I have not travelled so many places till now but I would like to share one of my travel experience.

Its in North Sikkim, East Himalayan range.

My God!! Its heaven on earth!!

So pure, so calm, the vision of this place is full of majesty and peace.

This lake is located at the altitude of 17,800 ft in Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and in India.

It was the month of September 2019, we travelled there via lachen, a village in north Sikkim. We left for Gurudongmar lake at around 4 am in the morning. Thankfully, the weather was crystal clear due to heavy downpour last night. It was chilled in the morning, temperature at around 3 degree centigrade in the morning at lachung.

We left.

The road was not good though as there was a landslide few days before of our visit. We halted at Thangu Valley and had our breakfast at around 7 am. As north Sikkim is in high altitude so there are very limited food options available. So for breakfast its mostly maggi and tea. We resumed our journey.

We reached Gurudongmar Lake at around 10.30 am.

Outstanding!!I am out of words to describe its beauty. The lake usually remained frozen for most of the year.

The lake is respected among the locals. Devotees offer prayers to this lake and do Parikrama(going around the lake), believing one can be blessed with a child.

Its chilling over there. We were shivering and our teeth were chattering. But its all worthy. All the coldness, the rough road, the breathing problem due to high altitude, certainly all our problems got vanished after witnessing the majestic beauty of the lake.

Those who have not visited the place yet, I suggest to travel there once.

So, this is my experience travelling to this amazing place. Hope you guys would like it.

With love,
