Mourning cries seep out of windows as howling winds circulate the decaying stench of death throughout New Orleans. Victor Montenegro walks the streets, which are deserted of the living, who still fear the plague and are weary of the sight of the dead sprawled on the cobblestones. It is October 13, 1853, and the board of health has officially declared the city free of the epidemic. Unlike the still fearful survivors who are sheltering in place, Victor strolls the streets, stomping his feet while carrying a gas lamp low to scare away the rodents that populate New Orleans, feasting on the orphaned corpses that have yet to be collected for a pauper’s burial. Victor is searching for Suzette and Ivan, who are among the few brave souls out helping to collect the abandoned bodies. There are no new reports of yellow fever outbreaks and deaths from the plague, and therefore Victor is not concerned about becoming another victim.

Victor will survive the yellow fever plague of 1853, just as he will survive Henrietta’s threat to bite him. Ivan has threatened Henrietta with desertion if she dares to turn Victor into a vampire. Angry with Ivan, Henrietta cries bloody tears as she too walks the deserted streets, snatching rats and putting them into her hand-carried steel cage. An immortal Victor is Henrietta’s only hope to retain Ivan’s eternal affection. Henrietta fears that if Victor dies, it will endear Suzette more to Ivan, which threatens Henrietta’s place in Ivan’s life.

As Henrietta rounds the corner of Royal Street, her lace dress floats over the bloated and decaying corpse of a man who died on his way back from interring his wife. She blinks the bloody tears from her eyes as she leans over and lifts a rodent from the side of the man and places it on top of the rodents in her crowded steel cage.

“Is my blood not enough, my love?” asks Drake.

Henrietta waves her hand over her face, and the bloody tears vanish. With smiling eyes, she turns to face Drake Forester, who is in human form.

“They are for the community, not just me. I love having your rich werewolf blood in my veins, but I do not want to drain you,” Henrietta says sweetly.

Drake takes the cage filled with restless rodents and offers Henrietta his arm. Henrietta takes his arm and proudly walks with him; she thinks that the rodents will make a lovely offering for Ivan.
