Tender Tears

Elbows on his knees.

Head in his hands.

Porch lights shining down on his dirty converse.

Melancholy snakes through his veins.

A scary kind of calm covering him like a fog.

He can feel the vibrations of words flowing over his ear.

But hears nothing.

He can feel her eyes on him.

But can't look up.

He can’t bear to see the tears in her eyes when she tells him she's leaving.

He can’t bear to feel her while she selflessly rips out his heart.

He thinks.

‘Maybe he shouldn’t have let himself feel so hard.’

‘Maybe he shouldn’t have let her in.’

‘Maybe he should have continued on with his life.’

Because now.

Now he might as well be dead.

She’s leaving?

She’s leaving.

She’s going on without him to live her life.

A life he’s not in.

His brain has stopped working.

Stunned into silence.

Her words jumbled into a dyslexic mess.

Then he thinks again.

‘Maybe this is for the best.’

‘Maybe love isn’t for him.’

‘Maybe she isn’t for him.’

‘Maybe he isn’t meant for anyone.’

‘Maybe walking through life empty hearted was his cruel destiny.’

Then some sobs slip from her lips.

And he can’t help but go to her.

Even though movement is painful.

Even though touching her burns like hellfire.

His hands on her shoulders.

Tears running dirty paths down both their cheeks.

Words finally form and fall from his mouth

“It’s ok, you don’t have to love me.”

And with the last letter, he dies inside.

Put six feet under with tear stains on his cheeks and his hands on the only thing he’s ever loved.
