Climbing High

Which comes first,

I wonder,

the trellis

or the rose?

No normal variety;

I must remember

to pick a type

that likes

to climb,

to twist and twine

its way upwards,

not outwards.

No good picking

a rose that

is afraid

to aim high;

there’s no place

for acrophobia here.

It starts quite short

but soon,

with a bit of coaxing

I’ll be able

to tempt it up

to the roof.

It adds a bit of color

to the plain

grey walls,

especially when I forget

that these roses

have thorns too.

I love to see climbing plants of all kinds, except ivy! Just love the smell of honeysuckle and roses. Lovely poem, Hully!
