You're Not Going To Believe

What Just Happened.

By Brian Lee Clements

Over the last few months, Jack Donovan and his wife, Kate, have been plugging away with their careers in Colorado Springs. Jack’s private investigation business has been doing pretty good even with the Coronavirus pandemic having slowed things down a little bit.

Kate, on the other hand, has been extremely busy. With her being a doctor, she has spent most of her time helping out in the Emergency Room with all of the virus patients coming through the ER.  But now she finally has a couple of days off to recharge her batteries and clear her head.

While Jack was busy making breakfast for everyone, Kate and Sam, their daughter, were sitting at the kitchen table trying to figure out why they were up so early.  Sam just happened to also be home doing remote learning due to all of the schools being closed because of the virus.

Jack gave them their scrambled eggs and bacon and looked puzzled by the look that they were giving  him.

“What?” Jack asked.

Sam replied, “Dad, why are we up so early?”

“I was wondering that too!” Kate agreed.

“Well, for one thing, it's ten o’clock and I didn’t want you to waste the day sleeping.”

“And the other reason?”

“I love you both.  Plus Sam has to do her remote learning and I want the two of us to get some exercise today.”

“Really?  You want me to exercise with you?”

“Sure. Why not?”

“I didn’t think you liked yoga.”

“Yoga?... I think I’ll pass.  I can’t hear what they’re saying anyway.”

Jack headed back into the kitchen to clean while Kate and Sam were still eating their breakfast.

Kate smiled and whispered to Sam, “I knew I could get him out of exercising with me.  He’s never liked yoga, even before he lost his hearing.”

Both Kate and Sam start giggling.

Unfortunately, Jack completely lost his hearing a couple of years earlier when a car bomb went off while he was investigating a murder. The bomber was eventually caught down in Florida six months later when Jack found him on the beach and fought it out with him.

While Kate changed, Jack went upstairs to his makeshift office and tried to figure out what case to work on that day.  He’s always had plenty of cases to work on.  It may have slowed down a little due to the virus but he was still busy enough.  Since he didn’t want to get too close to people, Jack decided to do some surveillance on an infidelity case that he had been working on recently. One client, Christoper Duncan wanted Jack to keep track of his wife, Debra. Duncan felt that his wife had been having an affair with someone at her business.

Well, Kate came to his office quickly and kissed him goodbye and then went off to her class.  She was wearing a black t-shirt with UAB. (University of Alabama-Birmingham) logo and workout pants along with white tennis shoes.  She was still in pretty good shape considering she didn’t have the time to exercise like she wanted.

She’s been trying to take better care of herself since she found out that she has Type2 Diabetes a year before. It was difficult at first to keep track of her Blood Sugar until she got an insulin pump which helped her keep it pretty much under control.

After Kate left, Jack started to check out the emails, text messages and any other correspondences of the person he was tracking.  He had a special program that he bought where he could monitor the computer that he needed to look at. Hopefully the owner of the computer couldn’t tell what was going on.

One thing that was unusual about this case was that he couldn’t find any evidence of infidelity.  Either she was pretty good at hiding everything or there was no hanky-panky going on at all.

Meanwhile, Kate got to her class and was told some disappointing news.

“Hi Kate. Haven’t seen you in a few weeks.”  Debra, the owner of the gym, said to her as she came in.

“I know. With this virus going around, I haven’t had the chance.”

“I’m afraid I have to tell you but this will be our last class for a few weeks.  The governor has issued some type of order that closes all non-essential businesses.  I guess we are considered non-essential.”

“Go figure.  I thought this would be essential for our health.”

“The government doesn’t think so.  They call it social distancing.”

“Hopefully we can get through this virus quickly.”

“I hope so.  You better hurry.  The class is starting soon.”

The music had already started and they had already started to go through all the stretching motions and then went into their routines.  Kate usually got bored with this part and she usually tried to do more than what the instructors wanted them to do.  It usually didn’t cause her any problems, until today.

As they were doing one of the stretching maneuvers, she felt a pop in her left hip and severe pain as she fell down to the mat.

“OH CRAP!!,” Kate yells out. “I think I hurt my hip.”

All the other attendants ran over to Kate to give her a hand.  They tried to help her up but she couldn’t put any weight on the leg. She was helped to a chair and one of the instructors called 911 for an ambulance.

It took the ambulance a long ten minutes to get to the business. At least it felt long for Kate. The EMT’s got there and recognized Kate right away.

“Dr. Donovan? How are you? Where’s the patient we’re supposed to see?”

“Believe it or not, this time it is me.”

“Really?  Usually, it’s your husband we have to see. How is he anyway?”

“He seems to be fine this morning.  No injuries since he got thrown off the Barr Trail a few months ago.”

“I haven’t heard about that one.  Now what happened to you?”

“I was doing some yoga moves and I felt a pop in my hip, then weakness and a lot of pain.”

“Ouch.  Let's get your leg stabilized and get you to the hospital.  I assume St Francis?”

“Yes. Please.  I need to get in touch with my husband.”

“How are you going to talk to him since he is deaf?”

“I'll text him. That’s how we communicate when we’re apart.”

“Does it work out pretty good?”

“Usually. When he is paying attention to the phone.”

At the time, Jack was still looking for some type of evidence of anything going on.  Things like credit card receipts, phone numbers or even something on her GPS. Nothing. Jack’s phone then flashes that he received a text message.

“Hi Honey.  You're not going to believe what happened.”

Jack looked at the text and said to himself,.”Oh god. Sounds like one of my text messages that I send when something happens to me.”

“Hi babe.  What’s going on?”

“I hurt myself at my yoga class.”

“Really?..How did you do that?”

“I was stretching and I felt a pop in my left leg.  On my way to the hospital. St. Francis.”

“Ok...I’ll meet you there.”

“Love 968.”

“Love you too”

Jack doesn’t remember the last time Kate hurt herself. It’s always been him. He heads to Sam’s room to let her know what’s going on.  But as usual. She’s not paying attention..  Jack flashes the lights in her room.

“Hi dad.  What’s up?”

“I have to go to the hospital real quick.”

“What happened?  Did you hurt yourself again?....Wait a minute, you’ve been home all morning.  How did you hurt yourself here?”

“Oh ye of little faith. No. It’s not me this time.  Your mom hurt herself at the yoga class.”

“How in the heck did she do that?  Never mind. I’m coming with you.”

“Ok. Lets go. I don’t know how long we’ll be there.”

“That’s fine.  It’s so weird mom is in the hospital and not you.”

“Yes I know.  I’m disappointed too”

Since Sam recently got her learner’s permit, Jack allowed her to drive them to the hospital. The drive would only be about 20 minutes but a long one for a nervous teenager.

“You ready?” Jack asked.

“For what?” Sam replied.

“Drive us to the hospital.” as Jack hands her the keys to the car.

“Now?  You want me to drive now? I’m a nervous wreck.”

“This is as good as any time.  This will also be good experience for you.”

“I’m sure it will be Well, I guess I’ll be driving you and mom to the hospital a lot with all your injuries.”

“Let’s go. You know how to get there, right?”

“Not really. I’ve never watched you drive there. I’m always looking down at my phone.”

“Okay. I’ll give you directions. You know how to get to Walgreens , Right.

“Of course I know how to get that far.”

“Head there and I'll give you more.”

After a nervous 20 minute drive for both father and daughter, they finally pulled up to the hospital  emergency room.

“Well, we made it safely.” Jack said.

“With the grunts and whimpers that you were making, I’m surprised that we’re alive.  What was your foot stomping on anyway?”

“I was hoping that I had a brake pedal on my side.  Unfortunately it wasn’t working too well.”

As they started walking towards the hospital, Sam just shook her head and handed the keys over to dad.  They entered the emergency room and everybody was busy due to the many virus patients. They walked up to the Emergency Room desk to get information on Kate.

The nurse at the desk gave them a strange look.

“Mr. Donovan.”  The nurse said. “ How are you today? Haven't seen you in a while. Let me get some papers for you to fill out. What happened to you this time?”

“It’s not me this time.” Jack replied. “It’s Kate this time. She hurt herself doing yoga.”

“Really?  Let me check to see where she is.  Not used to seeing you vertically here in the ER.”

“That’s what I’ve been hearing today from everyone.” as he looked at Sam.

“She’s in room three.  You’ll need to wear these masks to see her.”

“Okay. Haven’t worn a mask since I was 6 years old. I’ll do my best.”

“You better.”

Jack gave the nurse a shocked look as he put on the mask.

Sam then said, I’ll make sure he keeps it on.”
“Thank you,” the nurse replied.

Jack and Sam walk to the room and find the curtain drawn when they get there.  They waited a few minutes until Dr. Robinson came out of the room.

“Hey JoAnne,” Jack asked, “How’s Kate”

Kate and JoAnne had been friends for many years, going back to their days in Florida.

“ Hi Jack. She’s resting.  I gave her a pain killer to give her some relief.”

“What did she hurt?”

“Not sure. But the way she described it, sounds like a hip labral tear. We’ll find out when we do an MRI.

“Can we see her?”

“Sure. But not too long now.”

Sam and Jack go into the room. Kate was still wearing the same outfit that she was wearing when she left the house.

“Oh, mom!” Sammy says as she rushes to hug Kate.

Jack just smiles at her as he does the same thing.

“I’m not used to seeing you this way.” Jack tells Kate.

“Neither am I, I’m not used to being on this side of the bed.  Everybody in the ER is acting the same way.”

“I know. The nurse in the waiting room wanted me to fill out papers for me thinking I was here for myself.”

“I’m not surprised.  Even the ambulance EMT was surprised to see me.  You got quite a reputation.

“I guess I do.  What the hell happened to you?”

Kate described the incident again to Jack and Sammy while they were waiting for the painkiller to take effect.  In the meantime Kate got a visitor from the yoga class.  Her instructor, Debra, came to see her.

“Kate, how are you doing?” Debra asked.

Before Kate could answer, Jack turns around and sees Debra, Kate’s instructor.  He got a little flustered and had to do a double-take because she was the person that Jack was following in the infidelity that he had been working on.

“I’m in pain, but I should heal eventually.  How did the rest of the class go?”

“Not well.  After you screamed and the ambulance came, nobody had any incentive to continue.  They were too worried about you.  I told them I would check up on you.  The last class went ok.”

“Thanks for coming by.  Debra, this is my husband, Jack.  Jack, Debra.”

“Nice to meet you, Debra.” Jack responds.

“Nice to meet you too.  Haven’t we met  before? You look very familiar.”

“I don’t think so. I seem to have that face.”

“What do you do?”

“Now, I’m a private detective. Used to be a police detective until I lost my hearing.”

“Really? Do you have a business card? I might have some work for you soon.”

“Sure.” As Jack hands Debra a card.

“I think my husband is fooling around and I might need to have him followed.”

“Send me an email about what you know and I’ll see what I can do.”

As Debra left, Jack started to think about the situation that he now has.  Both husband and wife want him to follow the other spouse. Is that even ethical?

While he was thinking, Kate throws a wad of paper to get Jack’s attention.

“Jack, What’s going on?”

“Just thinking about a case I’m working on.”

“Does it involve Debra? You got a little perplexed when you saw her.”

“You may not want to know. I think I have a slight dilemma.”

“What is it?”

“You know that infidelity case that I’ve been working on?”

“Yea. You better hurry up and tell me because the painkiller is taking effect.”

“Debra’s husband is having me follow her and check up on her.”

“Really? And now she wants you to check up on him. You sure are in a bind, What are you going to do?”

“I haven’t the foggiest idea.”

“You’ll figure something out.”

About an hour later, an orderly took Kate to get an MRI on her hip while Jack and Sam went to the room to wait for her. In the meantime, Jack was checking his email to see if he received anything from his new client.  Nothing. He didn’t want to be distracted and wanted to be there for Kate.  She has always been there for him during his many rough times.

Kate was taken back to her room in a wheelchair and looked a little disappointed.  She saw the MRI and realized what she tore.  Just what Dr. Robinson suspected, hip labral tear.  She looked at Jack and was almost in tears.  Jack walks over to give her a hug.

“Hey babe. How bad is it?”

“It’s a torn labral in the hip.”

“How bad is it?” Will you need surgery?”

”Afraid so.  Probably tomorrow, if we can find a surgeon.”

“Could this be caused by your Diabetes?”

“Probably. I need to be more careful with my exercises.”

“Let’s see what the doctor says when he gets here.”

Kate gave him that look she makes whenever he made a stupid statement.

“What am I? A first year medical student?”

“What I meant is that the doctor may have a better insight on what you should be able to do. Plus they say doctors make the worst patients.”

“I guess you’re right.  I just don’t want to be here.”

“Just think, you’ll get all the free Jello you want.”

“As long as it's not lime Jello.”

“Yuk.  What do you need from the house?”

“Nothing really.  I got a suitcase in my office with a couple of days worth of clothes. One of the nurses will be bringing it down to me in a few minutes.  Why don’t you take Sammy home so she can work on her school work and then come back around five so we can have dinner together. All I’m going to do is sleep right now.”

“Will you be okay?”

“Yea, I will.  Love you, Jack.

They both started tearing up as he gave her a hug.

“Love you too, Kate.”

Jack left the room and almost forgot about his daughter who was waiting by the nurses station.  She went back to the room and gave her mom a hug.

As he was waiting on Sam, Jack checked his email and he noticed that he received an email from Debra. She asked if he could meet her at two o’clock.  Jack texted her that two would be fine and asked where would be a good place to meet.

In the meantime, Jack and Sam went home with Jack driving this time.  She didn’t feel like driving due to being so worried about her mom.  It took about another twenty minutes to head back to the house.

They got home around one and both of them were not hungry due to Kate being in the hospital.  So Sam went to her room to do school work and talk to some of her friends.  Jack, on the other hand, got another text from Debra telling him where to meet her.

“Mr. Donovan, will the Fountain Creek Nature Center be ok to meet?”

“Sure.  Is it open?”

“I don’t think so. But we can meet on the trail right below it.”

“Ok. I’m on my way. Be there as soon as I can.”

Jack then said to himself, “Oh god, I can see it now. I'll be beaten up or something will happen to me like it always does. I better take some protection with me.”

Before he left, he stopped by to talk to Sam real quick.

“Hey girl.  I need to go meet a client in a few minutes. Should be back around four. Then we’ll go see your mom and have dinner with her.”

“Okay, Please be careful. I don’t want to have to see both of you in the hospital.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“That’s all I ask.”

On his way out, Jack stops by his office and grabs his gun out of the desk drawer.  Since it was a little cool, Jack decides to wear a light jacket so he wouldn’t attract any attention to his weapon.

It took him about thirty minutes to get to the Nature Center from his home. Down Interstate 25 to Exit 132, Mesa Ridge Parkway  and then on Highway 85/87. Jack almost missed the turnoff to the center as he usually does and had to make a quick stop and turn.

Jack got to the road and it took him a slow three minutes to make the quarter mile drive.  This was because the road was like a washboard and it felt like his car was going to fall apart from the rivets in the road.

He finally got to the nature center and didn’t see Debra anywhere in the parking lot.  He then walked along the path which goes around the center down to a marshy lake.  There were quite a few families walking around the trails and watching the birds circling the marsh and the turtles sunning themselves on the logs sticking out of the water.  But, still no sign of Debra. He decides to text her to find out where she was.

“Debra, this is Jack.  I am here at the nature center”

“Hi Jack. I’m at the waterfall along the creek which is north of the center.”

“OK. on my way.

Jack gets to Debra in about five minutes with a brisk walk.  He forgot how nice the trails were in that area.  Unfortunately for Jack, he couldn’t hear any of the birds that were surrounding him.  At that time the winds started to pick up and the sky started getting dark.  Look like another sudden storm along the front range.

Jack then sees Debra along the trail.  She waved him over to her and looked very nervous.

“Debra, what’s going on? You’re shaking.”

“Chris is acting crazy.  He was accusing me of having an affair and threatened me.  I don’t know why he’s acting this way. I think he was having me followed.”

“I don’t understand either.  In fact, he had me check up on you.”

“Really? Why didn’t you tell me?.... And?”

“Couldn’t find anything. I just  wasn’t sure if there was any truth to it until I saw you at the hospital when you asked me to check up on Chris.”

“I’m confused.  I haven’t had an affair.  Why would he doubt me? I’ve been so true to him.”

“I don’t know. Could be having an affair himself or he’s just become weird.

“Weird? Is that a legal term?”
“I don’t think so. I just use it when I can’t think of anything else.”

As they were talking, a tall well-tanned man walked up to them.

“Debra,” The man called out. “I should have known.  Isn’t he a little old for you?

“Chris? What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been following you the last few days. The stupid private detective I hired hasn’t found anything”

The wind picked up more as they continued to talk. Chris then pulled out a gun and pointed it at them. Jack pulled Debra behind him.

“Throw your gun into the creek.” Chris said to Jack

Jack grabbed his gun and tossed it towards Fountain Creek.

Jack interjected, “That’s because there is no evidence of any infidelity.”

“Who are you?”

“I’m the stupid private detective you hired.”
“You? Why are you here with Debra?”
“She hired me today to check up on you.”

“Is that ethical?”

“I already told her I was checking up on her. Was going to tell you later.”

“Yea, right.  How do I know you’re not the one seeing her.”

“Because I’m not.”

The wind started picking up even more and the sky got darker.

“Okay. Let’s go.  I guess I’ll have to get rid of both of you.”

“What are you going to do with us?” Debra asked.

“What do you think? I have a gun and we’re near a lake. Duh.”

The three of them start walking towards the lake when suddenly one of the trees by the trail breaks a big limb and falls on the three of them. This causes everyone  to fall and Chris to drop the gun on the other side of the trail.

Jack and Debra started to run along the lake and Chris caught up with them. He then grabbed Jack and hit him in the side.  Jack then then takes a defensive stance and then notices that Chris started to take a martial arts posture.

“Oh no!” Jack yelled out. “Not another karate guy”

“That’s right.” Chris said. “Black belt.”

“Oh crap.”

Chris started to make moves against Jack which he was able to anticipate. One blow got Jack on the right side and then he got hit on the thigh.  With Jack limping, Chris decided to make a final blow toward Jack's head.

At the last possible second, Jack ducked which caused Chris to lose his balance.  Jack then ran towards Chris and pushed him over an embankment into the lake. Jack started to fall off the embankment himself but was able to grab onto a small tree.

Debra yelled out, “Chris doesn’t know how to swim.  Help him or he’s going to drown.”

Jack then jumps into the lake to help Chris out of the water.  It takes Jack about thirty seconds to find him and pull him above the water.  Jack headed toward a less steep shoreline and pulled Chris out of the water and made sure he was breathing.

Debra called 911 and the police and EMT’s got there within 5 minutes and checked everyone out.

“What’s going to happen to Chris?” Debra asked.

“Most likely jail time

“I’m sorry you got involved in all of this.”

“That’s ok.  I’m used to all this. Chris can’t swim

“No..How can I repay you?”

“Just have a great life.”

“I will. Thank you for everything.”

Debra then gave Jack a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

After Debra left, Jack looked at his watch and noticed how late it was.  He walked briskly back  to his car in his wet clothes. He found a towel to put on the car seat so it wouldn’t get wet and headed home.  It took Jack about thirty minutes to get home.

When Jack got home there, he stopped by Sam’s room to let him know that he was home.

“I’m going to take a quick shower, then we’ll head on out.

“Okay.” Sam looks up and sees her dad in his wet clothes.. “What in the world happened to you?”
“I’ll tell you later.”

“I don’t want to know.”

“Don’t tell your mom.”

“I won’t. But I’m sure she’ll figure it out somehow.”

“You’re probably right.”

Jack took his shower and they both headed to the hospital to have dinner with Kate. She texted that she has to eat the hospital food tonight and to get something for the two of them.  It took the two of them about 30 minutes due to stopping by Olive Garden and picking up some lasagna.

When they got to the hospital, Kate had  just started to eat her dinner.  It was baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and raspberry Jello. Her favorite.  A little bland but luckily Jack had an extra salt and pepper shaker with him.

“You saved me.”

“I got your back.  I knew you’d want the salt.”

Kate looks closely at Jack and leans over to pick something out of his hair.

“How did you get algae in your hair?”

Jack paused, “I was working on a case and things got a little out of hand and I had to jump in a lake. That's all.”

“As long as I didn’t see you in the Emergency Room, I’m good.”

As they eat, Jack started to wonder what their future will be with her injury and especially her diabetes.  Sure, there will be complications but they both know that they will get through this together with God’s help
