One foot in front of the other. I need to believe. To make a decision.

One foot in front of the other.

It was my motto, my favorite saying.

It was what kept me alive.

What kept me moving even when the shock of it all came crashing down.

The reminder that I couldn’t look back,

That I always had to be moving forwards,

Even if it meant abandoning everything I knew.

The words that changed my perspective and made me realize we were no longer living.

We were surviving.

One foot in front of the other.

How could I take another step when there was nowhere left to go?

We were surrounded,

And my other way out was the cliff that lay ahead.

The sudden drop that could set us free.

Would I be willing to take another step?

Even if it killed me?

Even if it was the only way out?

One foot in front of the other.

That was supposed to keep me alive.

It worked so far, hasn’t it?

I looked at my companion and the monsters that came closer with each passing second.

I closed my eyes and willed my racing thoughts to still.

I made a decision.

I grabbed my companion’s hand.

Turned to the edge.

And put one foot in front of the other.

Off the edge,

Crashing and falling but most importantly,

Believing.

Anastasia Kis

That's how the first step towards our dreams must be made - outspokenly desiring and blindly believing.
