A short poem about the experience of looking at and making art.

 Landscape with Cynicism

The green hills pour forward,

Overhead, clouds boil

And in the foreground,

The last absurd touch,

A goddess prone on a rug.

Looking on, only here

To dodge the rain

I frown, then pass on.

Only later thinking,

There must have been bravery

In the painter's hand

To set this tangle of lines

As a shot at immortality.

Did it hit the mark?

The earnest crew might know,

The coin buying inclusion

In this draughty civic barn,

Art dutifully imitating life,

In a silence where nobody looks.
