Status: Finished  |  Genre: Romance  |  House: Booksie Classic

I step onto the platform, pausing to breathe in the familiar scent of tobacco. Three weeks ago I had left with the man I love and now I’ve come back a changed woman, with my whole life ahead suddenly crystal clear. Mrs. Edward Dawson. My cheeks warm as I dwell at the idea.

“Come along Kate, Father doesn’t like to wait too long.”

Ah, London. A sore sight compared to romantic Paris. Edward’s back is already getting farther and farther away as he takes long strides toward the exit. A smile escapes my lips, because yes, its greasy London, but it’s where he and I will start a family together. Imagine the look on everyone’s faces when we tell them!

As I hurry to catch up with Edward, I behold quite a peculiar sight. A young man in a suit and top hat, standing close to an elderly woman. She takes out a note from her purse and gives it to him. Then he leans down and they share a kiss. He says something only they can hear. She laughs and touches his cheek affectionately as they break apart from their embrace.

I can’t help but stare, even sneer and wrinkle in disgust. How outrageous! Everyone too, couldn’t help but notice that exchange. I almost pity them, because a relationship like that could only mean one is taking advantage of the other. Unlike them, Edward and I are perfect for each other.

“How foolish that woman must be,” I say as I attempt to lock my arm with Edward’s, but he brushes me away. I pretend it didn’t happen, he’s too much in a hurry just like everyone else coming in and out of the station. “To think he would love someone like her when he looks like that.”

I glance again at the odd couple. Their time seems to slow down as people bustle around them. They are talking, with soft smiles on their faces. Their gazes are so intent and their touch so tender, it’s as if they’re the only two people in the room. I couldn’t help but turn away, it suddenly became too intimate. Perhaps I thought wrong of them.

Inspired by the realization, I look over at Edward and expect him to lock eyes with mine. When he doesn’t after too long a wait, I give up and find myself envious. Something’s not right here. I quicken my steps, easily overtaking him.

We are out the door when I turn around abruptly, halting Edward in his tracks. Tears cloud my vision.

“Why did you ask me to marry you?”

He looks into my eyes, trying to get inside my head. See, my eyes have always betrayed my emotions, but his are strikingly blue, cold, and hard to decipher. It’s so unfair. However, as his gaze shift down to my belly, this time I know what he’s thinking. He replies with a soft and ever so slightly accusing tone, “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
