The Subjugated beast

“You seem surprisingly calm,” the man said. “Especially considering I hold your life in my hands.”

The large wolf he held tethered, snapped and snarled. It seemed more than eager to spring at the woman, to leap up and fasten it’s jaws around her throat, and yet the woman stood tall and apparently impassive. Her attitude enraged the man, if not the beast, even more.

“Get on your knees and beg, woman,” he snarled. “Maybe I will let you live to see another day.”

The woman gave a soft chuckle. “You’re more of a fool than I thought if you imagine I’m going to grovel to you.”

“Grrr!” The growl escaped the man’s lips. “Are you that much of an idiot? Do you understand the agonizing death you will suffer at the jaws of this animal?”

The woman looked the wolf in the eyes, not flinching but holding its gaze. A look of kindness, of understanding seemed to pass between the two, before she looked back at the man with an icy coldness.

“Go ahead. Unleash the beast, for I have no fear.” She spoke calmly and clearly, with not a trace of a tremble in her voice.

“Fool!” The man roared and the wolf’s muscles trembled in anticipation. “This beast will obey my command! All it takes is for me to set it free.”

“Talk, talk, talk. That’s what you like to do, isn’t it! No wonder the tribe is suffering. You call me fool and yet it is you yourself that is the foolish one!”

The man’s hand moved slowly. He wanted to see the woman quake in terror; she still had the chance to save herself if she would just lower herself and beg for his forgiveness. Instead he was met by a look of challenge.

“Attack,” he ordered, as at last the wolf was freed from its tether. For a moment it froze, then its muscles bunched and with a growl of its own, it leaped, not for the woman’s throat but for that of the man.

He barely had a chance to register shock as the jaws of the massive wolf fixed themselves either side of his neck. The wolf paused, held the man firmly but did not inflict lethal pressure.

“You controlled the beast by bullying, mistreatment and abuse, just as you have your subjects. You relished the power it gave you, didn’t you?”

“I don’t know what witchcraft you are using to subjugate my beast, but call it off,” the man spat out.

“Oh, brave words, my Lord,” she answered. “I gave the beast the choice. To serve you and live in slavery or to serve me and then go free. I guess the wolf has chosen.”

With the slightest nod of her head, the wolf clamped hard with his jaws. The man screamed as his blood sprayed around the room, and the woman walked away.

Hah! A happy ending, Hully. In a gory sort of way. Good story.

Good story. I'll have to be kinder to my cat. I'm meant to be doing an online short story writing course through futurelearn and a song writing course too, via the University of Sheffield, but my head isn't there today. Too many death threats and too much whisky, but it's a lovely day and the view from my desk is marvellous. Sparse Australian scrub and distant paddocks. I see kookaburras, goannas and wallabies from my window. I should work on my song, Love Lies Bleeding. They don't write themselves.

Nope, they sure don't. Funny you should mention that course as I was browsing through futurelearn and openlearn courses yesterday. I think I'm going to have to stick with a written course though, as I find it really hard with video learning.
Thanks so much for reading.
