I saw you by the road side

I saw you standing there, motionless

I saw you in the dim of night.

I saw him about a feet away

I saw him with a bottle in his hands

I saw him in the dim of night

He grabbed you

You couldn’t even resist

He slapped your face

You couldn’t even defend yourself.

I wanted to shout “Hey are you okay?"

But my mouth shut like my lips were glued together

I wanted to walk on over

But my feet felt sunk deep under the ground covered in concrete.

I turned around as he pulled you away

I turned to glance back

And you were looking right back at me

I looked away.

I know your face and I know your place

I will come over to you and apologize

I was determined to make it up to you.

At the break of dawn

I saw your pictures on TV

The reporters said something about a dead body

The reporters said something about gender based violence

The reporters said, it was you.

My heart felt cold

My knees grew weak

And my eyes felt dry.

I did that, I killed you

My silence was your sentence

My inaction was execution

And my unwillingness , your death.

Everyday we hear cases of GBV and ignore the fact that its our responsibility to step in

Everyday we see women being abused and we choose to look away

The very definition of masculinity is an imagery that covers the shame men of today wear

Hiding from our responsibilities

Hiding from our duties

Let me ask you something..

Do you feel more of a man by brutalizing women?

Do you feel more of a man by abusing women?

Do you feel more of a man by killing women?

Call it GBV or femicide its one and the same

Women need our help

They need our protection

Be the man you supposed to be,an example to the boy child

Treat women with love and respect

They are the very definition of existence.

This raises a lot of issues, and it certainly is not only men that stand by and let things happen. The person that killed was the killer; perhaps a phone call could have been made, perhaps... so many different things. The feelings of guilt are hard to live with and that is expressed very well in this piece.
