Micro Cuts

They never intended us to be free. At least that’s what I tell myself. What other reason could there have been?

Every moment of every day was structured, controlled. We didn’t know any different, for it had always been like that for us. We were born into The Community and that was life as we knew it.

Decisions were made for us; we never had to weigh things up. In fact thinking altogether was something that was discouraged. After all, they could not see what was going on inside of our minds, so it was better to just take away any stimulus.

There was no awareness of the strings until they began to snip at them. One by one, they stripped us of our puppet strings and they left us floundering, adrift. If they had done it to all of us, maybe we’d have been able to work through things and find a way to survive. But they didn’t. We were singled out, Si and myself.

They banished us, sent us out into a world that we did not know existed. So much noise. So much confusion. We’d never dreamed that so many other people existed.

And they stared at us with their hostile eyes, not understanding how we had been cast adrift, as though from another world entirely. They grabbed us, separated us, and I screamed and I screamed for Si but if he heard... if he answered... it was lost to me.

He’s dead now. I know he is without even seeing him, for I can feel the void that has been created inside me by his dying. I will be following him soon, for the cuts are growing; the remnants of the puppet strings.

Let those that cut them have our blood on their hands. Let us haunt them with screams of betrayal until they too crumble.

Oh, I forgot to mention our crime, Si’s and mine. It was simple really. We fell in love.
