The final days

***

Scythia remained in the forest until her hair was very white and her limbs thin and brittle. She was nothing like the strong, robust woman she used to be, the one who seemed to battle the entire world. One day she sat down by her beloved river. She was oblivious to the reflection of the snowy hair and the dreamy blue eyes on the surface of the water. She stared only into the distance, at nothing much in particular. There Scythia finally expired. She blew out her last breath in that seated position by the river, while still holding a beverage in her hand. Jamel had found the little figure there, by the river, slouched forward as if she were in the middle of some deep thought or prayer. Since he knew it was her favorite sitting spot, he buried her right there where he found her. He dug a deep hole, as deep as he could, and threw a great variety of flowers into the hole. So there he said goodbye to his mother, in a grave with flowers inside and not on top, as she would have taught him.

Jamel had always suspected that there was something more out there, something very different than the jungle. But when he had studied his mother, her intense, almost manic determination to survive the jungle, he also realized something else. He sensed that although there was something great out there, his mother was never really part of it, that she wasn’t allowed to be. He had also seemed to know, to feel all along, what his purpose was, that he was born so that she could feel less alone.

He never knew of her dreadful past, of how she took revenge and then fled to the jungle, the only place that would accept her. Sometimes he thought of leaving the jungle, of exploring what’s out there…but then his bond with his mother ran too deep. He decided to shun a world that shunned his mother. One day, as an old man with wild white hair who lived a thousand adventures, his own time came. He sat down by the river and ended.
