A Ramble Through Time

Matching TWO TRAILS: 3½ miles (5.7km)

A walk between Matching Tye and Matching Green in Essex with a Church to match.

Take the path across the old churchyard to the swing gate. After 100yds climb stile and turn L onto footpath around field. At the yellow waymark turn R and cross the field. At mid-field fingerpost, where the crossways meet, by a dead oak, walk to the line of trees. Follow the track skirting the woodlands. Until you find the Kissing Gate.

Eventide, Friday 22nd May:

The village was deserted when we arrived. ‘The Fox’ was closed. We parked near the Village Hall, changed into our rambling boots, and set off. After two hundred yards we turned right at a fingerpost, the hot sun in our faces, and followed a grassy field-edge path until we reached the church. We passed ‘Marriage House’, where Jane lived once, then entered the graveyard. Her grassy burial mound was there, sparkling with crystals of dew! A young man knelt before her black marble headstone, the garland of red roses etched around her beautiful face, crying. I’m sure I heard a voice:

Shush, my love, don’t cry.

We looked around the graveyard. The church was a silent ruin. The hallowed grounds empty.

Hold me, my love, hold me.

She was with us once more!

The Kissing Gate, from Is It Today? by HJ Furl, was inspired by our walk between Matching Tye and Matching Green in Essex.

It’s good to feel you again, Jane. It’s been a long, long, time… hasn’t it?
