Persimmon

Deepening with the fall

Taut skin, fringe green.

You can be wrong about red

But not that orange sheen.

Patient flesh awaits its fate

Smooth, cool, a hint of give.

Ripe promise hello

To finger’s probe.

Leaves have finished

Their heavy lift

Now asleep on brittle bed.

A wilted crown on persimmon’s head.

Crunchy bite or juicy sip

Nose mouth of sweet autumn’s gift.

Beware though that taste of winter

If left too long to linger.
