Something that I wrote for my creative writing class a while back. The assignment was to write an abecedarian poem and this is the result. Let me know what you think.

Aged face of wrinkles, rough hands I cradle in my own.

Breath, slow and steady, like faint little whispers.

Coldness seeps into my body the longer I hold you, ice crystals

dive under my skin, swim through my veins as I watch you clasp

expired life, until it has to be given up. When you free

fall into a pit of darkness or let invisible

ghost hands come, lead you to that unknown place, a body left

here, but the mind, soul, spirit, eternities away.

I can’t beg you to stay, only to let the pain

jab and eat away until you disappear. However,

keep breathing, long as your lungs allow, let my voice

lull you gently to sleep as I remind you of past times. How you held

my hand when we crossed the street. So young, grip so tight, that way

never could I lose you. How we went to the park, and you pushed me

on the swings, pretended I could fly like one of the birds. A

pigeon that sailed the sky, careless, free and when I got to the highest point,

quickly jump off to soar in the air for those split few seconds, until I

re-met the ground below, where I’d wait for that

smile you always gave, even now as you lay, silently

treading on the boundary between this life and the next. Now it’s time,

unbind yourself from the chains that anchor you. As they

vanish, don’t be fearful, I’ll be right here.

Wake on the other side, but your mark will remain, an

“X” on my heart, permanently painted by your hands, but at least

you will be free from the anguish that haunted you, where there’s

zero pain. Still, I can only hope you won’t forget me.
