The Guardian Of The Bridge

He sits there and surveys the land around,

and I can’t help thinking

that he’s acting as a guardian.

Like a lion or tiger

that has somehow become reduced in size

but has remained oblivious

to his smaller stature,

he will decide who will walk across

and who will not.

I stoop down and stroke his head

and that moment has passed

for now he’s back to being a cat,

my cat.

He twines around my ankles before

escorting me across.

But later on I see him,

in the dimming light,

once more seated there on the far side.

An optical illusion, perhaps,

but for amoment I see him as wild,

as fierce,

as my friendly feline

has metamorphosed and is

back to being the Guardian of the Bridge.

That is so true. Cats stand guard and survey their territory. We just happen to be part of it.

They do. I read somewhere that all cats have ASD, making them very individual. Thanks for reading, Moa.

Melancholic Wisdom

This actually took me a little of guard, I was expecting this to be about one of those trolls that live under bridges but turns out it's just a cat XD. Which honestly that's probably how cats feel when they're standing in your way. Nice work, Hully, definitely has wonderful imagery

Thanks, MW. I have four, and sometimes it can really feel like they are escorting me.

Sue Harris

Cats are mysterious, independent animals, they choose when to be a pet and when not to be. This poem is a great example of their many faceted personalities, Hully.

Thanks so much, Sue. If I try and go for a walk along the road one or other of mine will follow and make me turn back.
