Subjective History X

“it is the victor who writes the history and counts the dead.”

Since the days of the Leaky Speedwell

13 generations removed

We Americans have been a rowdy bunch

Always with something to prove

First we shed our imperial yoke

Declaring ourselves to be free

Then we enslaved other nations

To fulfill lower stations

Proclaiming manifest destiny

We headed west on iron rails

Slaughtering everything in sight

Detouring when we reached the pacific

To the land of the northern lights

We conquered wilderness for its value

Be it timber or gold or oil

We raped and murdered and pillaged

Until blood leached from the soil

Politics is personality and ego

Religion is guilt and fear

We swung both like a mighty hammer

Without shedding a single tear

Those who profited tell the story

Recounting legends that history did not record

Tallying treasure beyond mortal men’s measure

All of the riches and lives one can hoard

Now we’ve come full circle

Our new king is a pompous clown

Lady liberty has been clapped in irons

And old glory waves upside down
