Gods of thunder and lightning do battle

Torden og Lyn

(Thunder and Lightning)

Fiery husband of Sif
god and father of the valkyrie Þrúðr
rumbles tempestuously
through his celestial domain
his magnificent trundling chariot
ferried by the eighth beasts
the infinite feasts

Hemmed in by the duplicator of might
he wields the mighty Mjölnir
destroyer of mountains
in defiance of the aftermath
of the gadfly's bite
hoisted only by virtue of Járngreipr's iron grip

Almighty husband of Hera
sixth son of Cronus and Rhea
born by the grace of a mother's deception
a swaddled and ignorantly swallowed rock
allowed the delivery of a god
preordained for his father's retribution

Emancipator of devoured kin
savior of one-eyed uncles
rewarded with an endless stockpile
of electrified bolts of destruction
wielded against giants
and the serpent Jörmungandr
in the times of Ragnarök
and hurled onto the world below
to punish Man's sins
a remembrance of his supreme authority

Kindred spirits united by storms of destiny
the gods' love-hate relationship
ancient as the cosmos
rowdy brawling in the damp ashen dust of eternity
Mjölnir pounds relentlessly
intermittently illuminated
by blinding streaks of white light

tears of exuberant adversarial laughter shed
beads of arduous rough-housing sweat sloughed
and droplets of the blood
of visceral engagement spilled
as the timeworn competition intensifies
deific fluid fall-out rains down
onto the mortal microcosm below
causing the insignificant inhabitants to run for cover
thunderous turbulence
induces shivers of primordial fear

the recurring empyrean contest
inevitably concludes in stalemate
in the spirit of fair play
neither willing to slaughter the other
exhausted and exhilarated
they part company
to the delight of the inconsequential
expendable beings below
