A Sea Of Roses
As far as my eyes can see
there are roses,
full blooming petals
and such a heady scent.
I could look at them
as a romantic gesture -
no doubt that’s how it’s meant.
But instead I see waste,
extravagance;
a simple smile
would have been worth
so much more
than even
one
single
bloom.
Even as I take them in
the petals begin
to dry out
and curl up at the edges.
It won’t take long
for them to fall away,
begin a
steady
decay,
and the gesture will be shown up
in its true light of
death.
I’ve never been quite able
to see the connection
between romance
and roses -
except for the letter ‘r’.

A Valentine's day staple, red Rose's. My son-in-law rushed our to get a bunch for my daughter not long after they were first married. He was not normally one for romantic gestures but she accepted them with surprise and gratitude... until she unwrapped them and discovered they were artificial... he hadn't even realised they were! After reading this poem, perhaps it is kinder that way. Thought provoking poem, Hully.
