This is one artist - living now- who I really love.

the backgrounds are often brushed-in around the protagonist(s). the actors in Malcolm Liepke's paintings have grey skin and red noses. their cheeks're flushed crimson. his fingers show the tactile relationship each digit has with glass, wood, cold - pouring rain. we've all played an extra in one of his bar scenes. look closely - you'll see yourself somewhere amongst the crowd. just look at all that patitioned orange and stenciled-in apple green. some of the stage props're sketched - appearing almost flat. the stars inside the picture frame all jostle for Liepke's undivided attention. and they get it: licorice jet-black hair. ruby lips. enlarged knuckles, floppy-looking hands. it's all 'wet on wet' looking. who knows how many coats of varnish are used to make you feel it's too slippery to touch - and forever smelling of linseed oil. Liepke is brilliant. a storyteller: a long night of hard drinking - last orders, please! lots of conversation dead in the water. we're caught in a trap - you said it Elvis! the barflies will be back tomorrow.
