What lies in the heart of the Amazon jungle? A mysterious monolith? An enigmatic past?

Part 2

When I was awoken the following day I found the campsite in a complete state of disarray, all the packs had been hurled around the campsite and the sleeping bags had been shredded to pieces and strewn about the vicinity. Out of all the chaos and clutter littering the place curiously only my belonging and the area surrounding myself appeared noticeably untouched. One last object of note remained completely undamaged by the apparent invaders, it was that enigmatic relief that I'd asked the geography to hold for safe keepings. In all the confusion of the night I had assumed he fled with it into the dark wooded depths of the jungle, yet when I awoke I'd opened my eyes only to be met with the eyes of the gothic beauty engraved upon it. Despite likely being catapulted from the terrorized hands of an individual so recklessly making his way through a dark foreboding jungle it was in notoriously pristine condition as if it were completely unaffected by weathering or time or human hardship. This caused me a moment of hesitation for you see my mind had yet to fully gather my surrounding, I wondered if perhaps I were hallucinating and the jungle surrounding me were a mere projection of my subconscious. This trepidation was met with a resounding no as once I gathered my barrings and I took note of the massive oppressive structure in the gorge below me. Until now I had yet to fully examine the confines of the rock formation below me, seeing the blazing sun upon my horizon I felt no better opportunity awaiting so I packed up my equipment along with the relief and hiked downwards towards what's maybe man-kinds lost chapter.

When I hit the bottom I was intrigued to find what appeared to an ancient temple accompanied by an obelisk-like structure, this obelisk was not unlike the smaller structure my party had found secluded in the jungle a day prior. Unlike the last one which appeared no larger than 12 or so feet this one was quite massive even when compared to the trees, it was at least 20 meters in length and of its girth it was at least perhaps 35 feet across. What intrigued me most about the obelisk was it carvings, it appeared to illustrate a multitude of animals all along its front in a sort of pyramid like image demonstrating earths various creatures all at varying degrees of ascendancy or significant. This arrangement of displays was incredibly detailed though in-spite of this I couldn't helped but be amused by the outlandish imaginations of whatever civilization carved this. For you see it appeared as if they'd illustrated extinct animals alongside those of the modern day ones, this to me spoke of a civilization more enamored in the spiritual side of thing over the realistic as no such creatures existed contemporary to man. This is best illustrated by the bottom row of the carvings which appeared to show an elephant followed by a sabertooth tiger and next to the ancient tiger appeared an indistinguishable form of sauropod-like dinosaur and next to the primordial lizard was a strange basilisk-like serpent. This trend continued as the carving ascended showing men followed by stranger looking beings with bizarre fish-like features and winged serpents hovering through the air as men with remarkably incorrect proportions appeared to fire arrows at them. This carving appeared to exaggerate the size of certain type of men as some of these individuals were portrayed as larger then those of the primordial serpents. There even appeared to be a carving of a colossal man killing and then eating what appeared to be a lion.

I continued to examine when the Obelisk when I saw it, in my peripheral vision I witnessed it. The Obelisk emitted a strange ethereal light that at first ascended into the sky being retreating into the hills and then suddenly there was silence all across the jungle. I could hear no wild-life nor was there any wind, suddenly and without warning I felt a sense of overwhelming dread overcome and so I fled away from the ruins into the deep depth of the jungle. I felt eyes watching me amongst the trees and I heard whispers, it was the chanting it had returned once again. As I sped through the brush towards my campsite I tripped over what appeared to me a loose foot-hole in the soil only to discover what remained of my expedition. I found hung in the trees the remains of my 11 companions, tied upside down with their throats firmly slit it appeared as though I was fated to be all alone amongst this endless canopy of wilderness. As I continued towards my campsite I withdrew from my pack a journal and looking at what appeared to be the last of my sunlight I began documenting my experience here.

I fear the night for in it it brings untold horrors, ancient evil buried by man-kind and cursed to be swallowed by the forest. I do not know what the obelisk is but I know it speaks to me, it whispers to me even now as I write this to you. For what untold terror lies behind the hills and trees? Perhaps eons ago ancient life had found communion with something outside the realm of the living. Perhaps ancient man had fallen victim to an enemy whose descent the sky beckoned in an age of darkness the like of which Earth itself wishes to forget. I know this appears to be the ravings of a madman speculating upon a structure he scarcely understands but I know this to be the truth for I have heard. Even now as the sun descends towards the west I can hear it calling to me, I know I haven't got a chance to make it out of here but this will not stop me.

I will bury this journal in the hopes my family finds this information but I must know the secret of the Obelisk and the temple that accompany it, I am compelled to do so without question. I see it now. Smoke billowing from the temple as the archway emits a blinding light, the obelisk is glowing now, it sings to me, I hear chanting louder then before. As I finish this final paragraph I cannot continue writing as daylight had abandoned me, I finish with the statement: I must know the secrets of the obelisk.
