A wallflower gets asked to dance

I stood on the edge of the dance floor, next to the prom king. Protecting his VIP status, he showed no interest in anyone outside his court. Ah, the prom court. Reserved for the most recognized and accomplished students. He had not so much as glanced at me. I could pick my nose, and he wouldn't turn his head.

He turned to his left, where I was, and looked right past me. Perhaps my dress made me invisible. It was homemade, with puffed sleeves. I sewed it myself, with my mom's help. Almost every girl in the room was wearing a spaghetti-strap long prom dress.

I could do a headstand, and he wouldn't peekHe crossed in front of me, almost stepping on my toes, to go ask another girl to dance.

I went outside for a breath of fresh air, and saw a couple students smoking cigarettes. Leaning against a palm tree, I bent backward with its curve, resting my head against its fibrous trunk. A full moon shone above me. I wanted an enchanted evening.
"God, surprise me," I whispered. Waltz music drifted outside. My heart jumped.
I hurried back inside and approached the dance floor once more. Its edges were lined with boys and I found myself standing behind a row of them. Their backs were toward me as they faced the dance floor, forming a wall in front of me, blocking my view. I peered between their shoulders, trying to get a glimpse of the action. It was The Skater’s Waltz. I recognized this song from Chariots of Fire, my favorite movie. I didn't want to miss this dance.
Suddenly there is an arm reaching through the shoulders, breaching the wall, holding its hand out to me. It belongs to a boy I have never seen.
I hesitate. He is smiling broadly at me, over the barrier of dudes, his arm stretched awkwardly, reaching far for me. Liking his eager look, I return the smile and put my hand in his. He closes his fingers around my hand, wrapping it in warmth, and pulls me into the arena. The guys turn as I squeeze through them, looking at me for the first time.
My suede-soled shoes softly touch the wood floor. He brings me to face him, transferring  my right hand to his left. I feel his other hand firmly on my back. He looks amused. Is he laughing at me? Or enjoying the moment. I know I am.
Then, suddenly, he sweeps me across the dance floor in quick, long steps. He is framing me just right and following him feels easy and natural. We are so smooth, we are gliding across the floor. I wish I could ice-skate like this, outside, on a frozen pond.
As if reading my mind, he leads me off the dance floor. The wall of guys breaks open to let us through. We continue rising and falling as we step, slide, step across the carpet, waltzing out the back door, into the moonlight.
My enchanted evening has just begun.

This is an excellent way of making the reader picture the dance environment.

So that was you that the Lord put on the dance floor to answer my heartfelt prayers for an angel who would not judge me harshly for my two left feet!!! Since it was a dream come true, I never opened my eyes after she accepted my hand, afraid that she would reject me or not be there after all if I opened my eyes!!! But the blessing of her acceptance, fills my heart with gladness at the angels God can send to Earth, in answer to a prayer!!! May your dance glide on forever, may your heart be filled with joy, may a Princess see reflection in your mirror, doubts destroy!!!
May faith, your heartlight brighten, and scripture be your guide; Beloved little Princess, in your heart may God reside!!!

What beautiful imagery, it was so picturesque. I could just imagine it all happening, and I felt like I was swept away along with them into the moonlight. It was a great story.
