Owlsare nocturnal birds of prey from the order Strigiformes, which includes 200 species. It stands out because of a very large, broad head, and very large eyes. They have binocular vision, and binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight.

Their eyes are tube-shaped and are completely immobile. Owls can turn their heads 270 degrees.

Great Horned Owls are mottled gray-brown with reddish-brown faces and a neat white patch on the throat. Other owls range from sooty to pale.

The barn owl weighs 430–620 g. and has a length of 32–40 cm. A larger owl is the Snowy owl weighing about 2 kg. and with a length of 63–73 cm.

The smallest owl is the elf owl only 6 inches tall, feathered in gray. It weighs less than an ounce and a half.

The rarest and largest owl is the Blakiston’s fish owl which is on the endangered list. It is the size of a small child and has a wingspan of up to two meters, and is found in Russia, China, Japan and possibly North Korea.

For owls, life and death rely on their ability to control noise. It’s stealth, not speed that makes them deadly. An owls nesting place is a roost. They are mainly solitary and roast alone. Certain types of owls will nest communally.

Owls are meat eaters and have few predators except other owls. They will eat weasels, bats, shrews, insect-eating birds, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, domestic birds, falcons, other owls, and domestic cats and dogs.

They usually don’t drink water, as they get it from their prey. They will drink water occasionally when they are bathing. The nestlings get water from fat.

A baby owl will eat celery or Brussels sprouts( in captivity), but would normally eat earthworms.

The end of October is mating time, and you will hear barn owls screams. Young owls will give piercing screams when begging for food, while adult owls scream when defending their nest.

Owls will not attack humans unless they come close to their nest.
