Not here with statistics or numbers, I just write what I feel is my opinion completely.

Mental health is something that keeps popping up like a seasonal flavour whenever something goes wrong, it never stays just fades away.

I think it is very important that we understand the importance of mental health just like physical health.

When we hear that someone is hospitalised for a fracture or any other physical issue we spread the news like wildfire and have relatives , well wishers , friends visit the hospital in dozens.

But when we hear that someone is visiting a therapist or seeing a psychiatrist we start whispering and gossiping.

Why the difference ? Is mental health not health ?

You have no idea what it feels like until you have felt the pain. So stop saying "just get over it" , "think positive things" or " Dont think about negative things and depress yourself. "

Do you think someone wants to be depressed ? No , they don't. It is not a choice that they depress themselves. Depression is a condition just like any other disease.

Anyone who is struggling with depression does not go and end their life on day one , they fight it everyday , every minute to survive to leave it behind. It's not as easy as having a pill, sleeping over it and it's gone in the morning.

It doesn't leave you , not even when you are in a crowded room.

And let me tell you they are not trying to seek attention, they just need someone to talk to or understand them.

We need to get rid of the taboo and we need to stop judging people so they can deal with their issues.

I think it is very important that every parent talks to their kids , explain that mental health and being happy are very important , especially in our generation where everything is a competition.

Along with everything else, teaching how to deal with failure, with disappointment, dissatisfaction is very important. Teaching them to face life is not found in a school or college book, we need to teach them how to deal with life.

Parents also need to understand it is not always important to give your kids a solution , listening to them is also more than enough at times.

There are a lot of kids who don't make good friends , but they need someone to vent to, talk to. Be that someone in their life. Do not judge them or lecture them just understand just listen. Pick the best part and appreciate it. It could have a huge impact and change their life.

Its not just kids and parents , there are a lot of times when we do not realise our own friends are depressed. Our colleagues who we spend most of our day with could be fighting to survive and we wouldn't know.

It is not a rule that a drastic event effects someone who is already depressed. It could be a single harsh word spoken by their friend or colleague that could cause them trauma.

Be as caring and empathetic as you can towards the people you meet everyday. Try and stay in touch with everyone you know.

One call could make someone's day. It could save a life!!

You dont have to run along with everyone , compete with them or reach your destination unsatisfied. Stay where you are, find your own path and reach your destination being satisfied.

If you know someone who needs help , encourage them to communicate and share their problems either with you or someone close and try not to judge even a single word from their story.

Im not certified in anyway when it comes to mental health , but I've learnt to be empathetic from my experiences in life and would love to listen to anyone who wants to vent, without the fear of being judged.

Love,
Nelluri K

Your opinion is gladly accepted. It is well expressed with good observation and ways in how to deal with it. Many times when a simple question like "How are you?" can bring tears in me, and the time people are willing to spend in receiving the answer, even just few seconds, is life saving. The Depression can be like an elephant sleeps in your bedroom, too huge to get rid off fast; but it can be like a rock stands on a tip of needle, a light push of a finger can make it fall. And whoever is willing to assist with that push is an angel to me. Thank you very much for sharing this article.
PS: pills are never the cure that can get rid of depression. They leave the elephant slumber in the room while it grows bigger, the rock seem to fall while it still attach on the needle and become solider.

I'm sorry. I couldn't get passed the grammatical errors on this piece. Learnt is LEARNED! I'm not sorry to be hard on writers because we want to see WRITTEN material with grammatical spelling, not gibberish brought on my new generational ignorance.

Apart from that one word , if there is anything else please do let me know. I would be more than glad to improve. This is just my first article and I'm sure there is a lot to learn.
