Cover image:

You stayed away for a while,

not wanting to chance the emergence of ghosts,

of hers in particular,

for you do not think that you could bear it -

the reminder of the life

you failed to save.

A flash of sunlight across the sky

draws your eyes upwards for a moment

and that split second is all it takes

for her figure to form

just as it looked on that fateful day

when you’d wished you could die too.

Her laughter echoes,

wraps its way around you, through you,

as she turns her face to look over her shoulder.

A smile that you could never forget, aimed at you.

The words form in your throat:

“Watch out!” you warn, now, as you did then,

but it’s too late... always too late.

In slow motion you relive the scene.

You watch her slip, trip,

and hear the impact as she hits the rocks,

the splash as she rolls into the sea.

Then the only movement and sound

is that of the lapping waves.

Gasping, you race out as quick as you can

but the rocks are sharp and treacherous,

don’t have the smoothness of stepping stones

and it takes time... so much time...

and by the time you reach her

it is once again too late.

You throw back your head

and howl out your pain... your loss as you relive it again.

Salt water splashes your face

as you kneel on the jagged stones,

just as you did when you cradled her head.

Salty tears fall from your eyes as the seagulls echo your pain-filled cries.

Why can’t you be allowed to turn back the clock?

She’s gone;

the girl you tried but failed to save

This is so poignant and moving, having to live with such a tragic memory, the guilt etched on your soul for ever. Brilliantly expressed, Hully.
