Chapter 2 Now when Madrigal was about seventeen, she began to put all of the farming duties upon herself, because her mother had grown ill and feeble. At dawn, she would get up, kiss her mother, and say to her "Now you rest Ma-ma. I'll be back with wood for the fire and something to eat." Day after day, and month after month Madrigal would tell her mother that and then, with an empty pail in each hand, leave the house and go to the farm to work.
