Chapter 5 Winter ended and another year came. Some time passed with realative ease, as well as could be expected, but then without warning a great drought came upon the entire land, a server famine soon followed. Food and water was scarcer than it had been in a hundred years. All the people in all the land had to work twice as hard for half as much. Things were especially grim for Madrigal and her mother. Because they lived far from the village, they had no neighbors to help them. One day during the time of the great famine, Madrigal was doing the best she could to draw water from their well. Trance and Skitter sat out with her trying to keep her spirits up. As she pulled up a nearly empty bucket she said "This will never do!" Trance and Skitter lowered their heads most somberly for they knew Madrigal was very sad. "If it doesn't rain soon, I don't know what will become of us!" Madrigal told the mouse and the owl. "Well come on you two." Madrigal said grabbing the little water she could draw. "Let's make the best of it."
