The loathsome lullaby that comes at night.

She appears at night as an unwanted lover

Sneaks into my bed and curls against me when I make no move

Her skin is chilled to the touch and it’s hard for me to breathe

And when I am sleepless and aching, I listen.

Oh darling, she says,

All you need is me.

When everyone comes to loathe you, I will be by your side

When you succeed at nothing, I will still love you.

She continues to reassure even as the moon disappears

Sparing me no energy to argue against my own thoughts

Though sleep comes eventually like an old friend

Still, I will see her again like clockwork.
