Invisible Chains

You might not see them

but that does not mean

they are not there.

Chains, invisible

but just as tough as

those used to shackle,

to imprison,

and control.

I’ve tried to loosen

their hold over me

but there’s not been

any give

but plenty of take,

and the room that I had

has now shrunk.

I’ve a desire to make

the invisible

visible;

have chains of ink

injected through my skin,

my veins,

let them permeate my blood

as they have my mind,

for then, at least

I would no longer

be obliged

to pretend.
