They stood together watching from the one way window as the procedure began.

The first injection was administered, a muscle relaxant. While he was still conscious he was asked again, and the answer remained the same.

It was then that Erin spoke for them all, "thank you for your sacrafice Alex,,,you have our undying gratitude."

The pleasant sensation brought on by the drug had him smiling as he answered, "you said that to all of them...the ones from before?"

Nodding she laid a hand upon his, "yes. But believe us...we feel it so much more with you."

Moments passed and the drug that brought deep sleep was given. Just before he closed his eyes the question was asked for the final time and a whispered 'no' followed.

As the five encircled the gurney the fatal injection was administered, something concocted from Ravens finest chemistry.

"My specisl recipe, a brew guaranteed to be free of all pain and physical distress."

They watched in silence as the sheet was pulled over the body. After several seconds Ken turned to him, "we've met the crossroad David...it's done."

As the body was wheeled from the room to be taken to the Vat where Green became Bread, David glanced at him, "we've chosen a path...now we'll see where it leads."

In the months that followed there would be more volunteers under the age of fifty. Because of Alex no argument was given, the age barrier had been broken.
