Alex was jolted out of her daze when Luke’s ringtone once again echoed through the car. Just as she had before she pressed ignore and cranked the air up in hopes that the blast of cold would shock her awake. She couldn’t remember the last time she slept or what day it was, but she couldn’t stop. She had to find the truth, and at a loss with Jeremy, she turned her full focus on Damian. She found herself watching and waiting for Damian to do anything beyond partying and it was driving her crazy. Her phone ringing again began to create an irrational annoyance inside her. Luke was beyond persistent, but each prior phone call had only been to check in on her, he wouldn’t disclose any new leads or where they were at with the case. In a pointless effort to get him to stop she finally answered.

“Cruz.” She spoke as if not knowing who was calling.

“What are you doing?” His delivery of the question had an accusatory pitch and one she was getting used to.

Alex began to reply but Damian emerging from the club with his entourage had her sitting up straighter and hanging up on her partner. Damian stood on the curb and smoked. He was six-four but stood as if he was the most intimidating man around. He was exceedingly handsome, and he more than knew it. His beautiful olive complexion was a contribution from his Spanish mother, while thick curls of the darkest chocolate contrasted with his vibrant cerulean eyes. He always had walked with an air of arrogance; born from the fact he was assured that he was untouchable. Alex was detemined to make sure he knew that his privalege meant nothing when it came to murder, especially a childs.

People spilled out of the doors and began to dissipate, but Damian remained. Anger boiled over at his nonchalant attitude and carefree disposition. She wanted to see if he had any injuries or marks to give her more of a reason to push her suspicions further. She was done hanging back; she jumped out of her car and headed towards the young Sloane.

“Damian, got a second?” She approached with her badge clearly visible.

He smirked and stepped forward. “Not for you, I don’t.”

“I think you should reconsider.”

“My lawyers have already spoken to your boss. You even approaching me is harassment.”

She laughed lightly. “You haven't even experienced true harassment.”

“Maybe I’d consider if it involves you and handcuffs.”

With his remark, she lunged forward and slammed him into the wall. “You won’t get away with this. I’ll find the one slip up that nails your ass.”

He stared back down at her but didn’t flinch.

His egotism pushed her to press him harder into the brick building. “Your Uncle can’t protect you forever.”

Before he could respond she felt herself being ripped away from him. She was ready to fight, assuming it was his bodyguard, but it was Luke who was suddenly between them.

She pushed back and moved towards Damian again. “A ten-year-old boy? You’re truly pathetic.”

“Watch yourself, cop,” he warned.

“Or what? You’ll break into my home, drug me, and torture me before you kill me?”

Luke once again intercepted her and with gentle force backed her away. Damian laughed as she was being escorted and it only created more rage inside her.

She spun and dodged Luke to once more faced Damian. “I’m not done with you. I promise you that.”

Damian only continued to laugh and mockingly waved in her direction. “Hope you enjoyed your last day on the job.”

Luke quickly entered her eye line again and blocked any final interaction. He spoke to her as he continued to move her away, “What the hell are you doing?”

“What no one else will,” she bit out and with a twist completely pulled away from Luke.

“Are you trying to undermine the whole investigation?”

“Cause following me is putting the work in where it matters.”

“It’s been days and you’re not acting appropriately and I’m worried.” He looked back to the scene behind him. “What would you have done if I hadn’t broken you up?”

“Use your imagination.”

She tried to turn away again but Luke grabbed her arm to keep her engaged. “Maybe if you had answered your phone you wouldn’t be here.”

“What does that mean?”

“We have O’Hara.”

Alex felt a cold sweat overtake her. “What?”

“He came in willingly after being caught lurking around your residence.”

“I can’t believe it. Have you been camped in front of my place?” She accused.

Luke crossed his arms in an expression of his defensive anger. “I can’t believe you’re upset I stopped a man from possibly harming you because I happened to be there to check on you!”

“I would have been fine,” Alex said quickly. She mentally kicked herself for missing an opportunity to speak with Jeremy. “Has he said anything?”

“He opened up after I presented our evidence.”

“Opened up and said?”

“He confessed.”

With those two simple words, Alex felt the last drop of control slip away. She stumbled with a sudden wave of dizziness overwhelming her. Luke’s demeanor changed as he felt the sudden shift in Alex. He gently placed a hand on her shoulder and redirected her towards his car.

“I’ll drive us back to the office and then send someone to retrieve your car.”

Alex shook him off and straightened in an effort not to expose the turmoil that suddenly swirled inside of her. All the questions she needed to ask Jeremy surfaced but there was one that felt even more pressing. Could Kate have been wrong? Or the one she suddenly feared the most, could she have lied?
