Secrets

By Razia Refai

I had a secret; that someone told me.

I kept it safe, as safe could be.

Every time I spoke to anyone.

I found I had to hold my tongue.

Heavy did it grow, a burden too hard to bear,

until I could not care.

So, I told it to someone, to be free.

Only I didn't count on it haunting me!

My secret spread like fire in a matter of days,

moving from one place to another in numerous ways.

I couldn't take it back even if I did try.

It was too tedious to sort the truth from the lie.

I couldn't face her; I was full of shame.

But it was her secret, so who should bear the blame?
