The Sexual Double Standard

Does It Still Exist?

Some researchers have argued that while the double standard may have existed in the past, it has all but disappeared among the current generation of young people.

In a 2013 paper published in Social Science Research, Rachel Allison and Barbara Risman of the University of Illinois at Chicago analyzed the data from over 24,000 US undergraduates at 22 colleges across the country.

It found that most people did NOT endorse a double standard. (66% of men and 70 % of women).

Of those in the research, premarital sex was not an issue.  Everyone agreed that sex in a committed relationship was perfectly acceptable for both men and women (5.5 on a scale of 1-6).

Those studied DID AGREE it was a different matter within a casual context.

Both men and somen considered casual sex more acceptable for men than for women.  This contrast was stronger within the male population.

Some 28% of men and 4% of women said they would lose respect only for women but not men who hook up a lot.

A full 55% of women and 35% of men (called “egalitarian conservatives” in the study) said they would lose respect for both men and women who hooked up a lot.

An interesting fact was that there was a reverse double standard” in the 16% of women and 6% of men reported that they would lose respect only for promiscuous men, but not similarly for active women.

The results were that there was still a double standard, mostly by men but that most young people do not subscribe to it.

Double standards are alive and flourishing today just as much as it did in the past.
