Let’s Pretend

I was 23 years old

On my 40th birthday

Old enough to know better

But young enough not to care

When I blew out the candles

I turned 60

Lost in the haze

That still lingered there

Swirling in the smoke

Were so many memories

Of holiday meals

And shenanigans with friends

But now the past is gone

The future undone

And there is no present

Left to defend
