If I could go back to that summer before…

To show her understanding me would be a chore

I would tell her not to waste her time on me

That everything would make sense if she listened to me

That someone would come that’s better than me

That someone after her last heartache would make her smile

She would be better off not stopping to fix me

Because it will take me a while

Why would she even want me?

But even then, she would stay for a time

And try to tell me that she found something in that wreckage of mine

To hold my hand and comfort me

To promise to never leave

I wish anything she said could make me believe

But rather, I curl into a ball and weep

Because she will never be mine to keep

Because someone else would run their fingers through her curly hair

And speak her name into the summer air

I’m a heartache she can’t afford

If only I could go back to that summer before…
