a poem about a boy getting beaten by a carnival husker.

boy sees carnival lights

arc lights slowly

sashay back and forth

across the night sky

sometimes shining on clouds

that get in the way

to a boy it meant the

carnival was back in town

a midway full of food

and trinkets to win

sideshows full of freaks

cotton candy hotdogs on sticks

caramel dipped apples

and fried dough

the boy was awed as he watched

the lights crisscrossing the dark

night sky above his home

he wanted to see the sights

on the midway he threw balls

at a pyramid of stacked milk bottles

win every time the hawker said

only a dime and you might win

your mama a big teddy bear

just knock down all three

seemed like it could not be

that difficult to do

the boy paid his hard earned dime

picked up three balls and aimed

hurled them one at a time

at the stacked bottles

first ball knocked off a bottle

second ball did the same

the hawker said, now just take your

time and aim at the one bottle left

don’t rush, it is almost yours

he was making the boy nervous

with his chatter

he aimed and threw the ball

for all that he was worth

and missed

shocked that he missed

he said what did I win

the hawker smiled and

gave him a little

plastic sticker that said

“everybody wins!”

he decided that he would

never run off to join the carnival

a plastic sticker was not worth a dime
