SCARS

I AM COVERED WITH SCARS

SCARS I TREASURE, FROM BEING LOVED.

SCARS OF SWEET, HOT PLEASURE.

MARKED FROM A SMALLPOX VACCINE TO KEEP ME WELL

POKED AND JABBED IN THE NAME OF HEALTH

PUSHED AND STABBED BY HATE AND DEATH

WORN AND TORN FROM KITTEN CLAWS’

AND VICIOUS JAWS OF LIFE’S CRUEL MAWS

THE SCARS OF A NEVER BORN CHILD

THOSE DREAMS UNFULFILLED.

THERE ARE SCARS FROM HEARTBREAK,

FORSAKEN DREAMS AND LIARS.

SCARRED BY CHANCES NOT TAKEN

THE RIVERS OF TEARS CARVED DEEP GULLIES

WHILE BABY KISSES MADE THESE SMILE LINES DEEPER

SCARS FROM HARD WORK

GROWING GARDENS AND KIDS AND LIFE LESSONS

WOUNDS FROM MISSED LAST CHANCES

OF WORDS NOT HEARD OR SPOKEN.

SECRETS I CARRIED AND THE SHAME I BURIED

THESE SCARS I WEAR WITH HONOR

THEY MAKE ME WHO I AM

THE MISTAKES AND THE SMART CHOICES

THE LOVING WORDS, THE CRAZY VOICES

THESE SCARS TELL MY STORY

PAIN, SWEAT, AND GLORIOUS BLESSINGS

SOME UNDESERVED, SOME I WORKED HARD TO EARN

SOME SCARS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE

MOSTLY THE SCARS ARE BURIED, RAGGED AND DEEP

AND WHEN THIS LIFE IS OVER; WHATEVER THE END MIGHT BRING

I’LL TRADE THESE SCARS FOR ANGEL WINGS
