A man has gone missing, and the only clue is a mystery rider.

Off the Trail

By: Athena Williams

David Miller was missing.

Everyone had something nice to say about him which frustrated the hell out of Detective Rayford. He would have had an easier time finding suspects if the man had been a cheater.

The only lead was a long-haired woman riding a white mare, seen approaching David Miller before he wandered into the woods. The thru-hikers all mentioned the same thing. She stayed off the trails. No one had seen her face.

Detective Rayford and his partner, Detective Yetzer, investigated the sighting of the mystery woman. They began to suspect a robbery and only came up empty handed.  While searching in the woods for David’s body, four days after his disappearance, Rayford’s cell buzzed.  He looked at the text message, then at his partner.

“We have a serious problem, Yetzer.” Detective Rayford said.

“What’s going on?”

“Our suspect has been spotted in other towns and cities.  All over the country.  Same type of case.”

Yetzer saw something from the corner of her eye. Rayford followed her gaze toward the white fog slowly rolling over the ground.  They heard hooves clattering in the distance.

“It’s the horse,” she said. “And...the rider.”

Rayford was a man who spent most of his career dealing with jealous spouses or drunken idiots. He was not prepared for what was approaching.  Rayford had to try, he was a man of the law, after all.  He felt his throat closing up as he spoke.

“I looked and behold, a pale horse, and the rider’s name was -”
