Homage to Willie Mays

The Earth Stood Still

(with a nod to W.H. Auden and William Blake)

When Willie Mays came to the plate

A hush came over the crowd

Hot dog vendors stopped vending

So did the peanut vendors

Even the beer hawkers stopped hawking

None of this really happened

In the bleachers or the box seats

The upper levels or the press box

Nowhere did any of the above occur

Except in the mind of Willie Mays

In the silence of his days

The Earth stood still for Willie Mays

His immortal hand and eye

Could hit a baseball to the sky
