They were ghosts against the treeline

Watching me watch them

I could not call to them

Had no names to speak

Though they knew mine

It was another world

A separate age

An epoch out of time

Yellowstone time

The smaller one

The mother

Walked beyond the second

The larger

Wounded,

Halt and dying

I felt everything

His hip flecked red,

The thick brush would not suffice

The female sniffed me out,

Head down, eyes yellow and narrowed.

She feels it coming too.

They return to the darkling shadows,

Ghosts against the snow,

Their time at last run down.
