Jamie and Ellie are going into high school, but Ellie is worried that their boy/girl friendship won't survive.

"Ellie, you ready for high school?" Jamie says with a grin. "High School? I hope it's not like the movies." I reply smiling back. "But movies are fun!" He says playfully. "Not the ones I'm thinking of." I say. "Ha." He says. "We'll be the only ones who know how to juggle." He jokes. "When did you learn how to juggle?" "Who cares?" He says playfully. I like that about Jamie. He's always smiling, and making me smile too, it's contagious. We walk to school together every day. Since first grade. Best friends. Oh man, it's a miracle we survived middle school. But high school? If a girl and a boy are best friends. They're probably gonna see it the wrong way. Especially with us walking to school together. I haven't said anything about that to him though.

The bell for first period rings. We both look at our schedules. How did we get all the same classes, at the exact same time? Must be a coincidence. Of course, we have math first period! My single least  favorite subject. When we get into the classroom we look for our desks. Right next to each other. Great. "Who can tell me what y equals if M is 5, x is 2, and b is 3?" The math teacher, Mr. Will, drones. Nobody answers. Awkward. The bell rings as he's about to call on someone. Great save universe! I think to myself. After second period, we have lunch.  I brought peanut butter and jelly, luckily no one near me has life-threatening peanut allergies. A girl from a couple tables over invites me over to her table. "Hey, I'm Stephanie." She says. "I'm Ellie." I reply. "Can you ask your boyfriend to come sit over here? He's hot." She says. "Oh...umm." I say embarassed, "He's...not my boyfriend. We're just friends." She rolls her eyes, "Whatever. Anyway---Did you hear Ariana Grande released a new album?" "Uh.....Who?" I ask, feeling dumb. "Have you been living under a rock or something?"She asks "N-no?" I reply "Whatever. You're wasting my time." She says. I'm thinking I should leave. I sit back down next to Jamie. "What was that about?" He asks. "Nothing." I reply. He's sitting with a bunch of kids from the space club. "You should join!" He says. "I'm not really into space stuff." I reply.

After school we walk to the basketball court. I probably won't do as good as I normally do. My backpack is full of 200 pound books and my back is killing me. There is a long scratch down Jamie's arm. I grab his arm. "What's this from?" I ask. "Nothing!" He says. It was obviously something, I think to myself. Who would do such a thing? "Hey space boy!" a voice calls. I recognize it. Lukas. Storm. The self-proclaimed "star" of the football team. With a GPA so low he makes cavemen look like geniuses. "I asked you to do my homework. And No one says 'no' to me." The other players in the football team are behind him. "Get him."Lukas says, pointing at Jamie. They're beating him up. "Leave him alone!" I yell, summoning every ounce of bravery I have. "Ooh, look at this," He says mockingly, "Space boy's wittle girlfriend is coming to save him." He did NOT just say that. "I SAID," I yell. "LEAVE HIM ALONE!!" I swing my backpack, with the 200 pound books still inside, straight at his face. It knocks him unconscious. The football players leave. I hear sirens coming our way. "Jamie, Get up." I say, holding back tears. We run home, to my house. The cops are at the door. "Through the back door." I say to Jamie. "Now."

We're in my room. Jamie has a bloody nose. He's scratched all over. My mom comes up. "I heard what happened." She says. "I'm not going to punish you or anything. That boy deserved what he got. He already has a terrible track record. He's lucky he isn't in jail already." "What did the cops say?" I ask. "They heard what happened and wanted to make sure you guys aren't injured." "How did they know?" I ask. "Well, there's a boy on the football team, Jack Wilson," my mom says.  "He heard what they were planning. He knew it wasn't right, and he didn't go through with it. He says Lukas would have hurt him, but instead Lukas said 'I'll deal with you later' and left to attack Jamie. He told the cops everything, he saw it all." I breathed a quiet sigh of relief. We were finally safe...

Gosh, this high school feels like a battlefield, lol. I'm glad Ellie and Jamie are okay at the end of the story. Nothing wrong with being best friends with the opposite sex.

Thank you for writing and sharing this. :)
