Organized religion and MAGA are cults

Most of the people on this earth know the stigma that the word cult has ingrained in it. Death, blood, the devil, a leader with their people in tow, human sacrifices, etc. Do Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate ring a bell? Both of these famous cults are notorious for their mass suicides. Charles Manson, leader of the Manson family, which was a group of about 100 people who all had a passion for Manson’s unconventional lifestyle and abuse of LSD, are thought to have killed upwards of 35 people. Manson idolized the Beatles, and their song Helter Skelter which was about the rise and fall of the roman empire, but he interpreted it as a race war. He also had a strong belief in the notion of Armageddon from The Book of Revelations, where the kings of the earth battle against god. There are many very popular horror movies such as Hereditary and Midsommer that portray what someone would normalize a cult as, but what is the real definition of a cult? Cult, by definition, is “a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object.” Interesting. Recognizing the definition of what a cult is, setting aside the stigma, it’s safe and accurate to conclude that organized religion in and of itself, is a cult. Each religion can be classified as a cult, to definition.

This paper is not an attack towards any religion or those who are religious. What I find so interesting is why so many people who are religious, and other people as well, choose to stigmatise this word. Why is the word “cult” so stigmatized? It’s because you are only given the idea of what a cult is, or should be, and all those ideas that you have been given, are treacherous, terrible, murderous ideas. Take the Charles Manson Family case as an example, the murder spree the “Family” had, killing 35 people, is what you would expect from a “cult.”  The cult you see in horror films, the cults that abduct people and have mass suicides. Cult itself should not be a stigmatized word, because every religion on this earth is a cult, by definition.

The Bible is something idolized by Christians. The Quran by Islams. The Hindu gods. The Torah, and others, by the Jewish. Although not every example is given of every religion, they all idolize either God or Gods, and a physical thing, a holy scripture. Again, the definition of cult is “a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object.”

Whether the religion be monotheistic or polytheistic, there is no arguing that every religion idolizes something, the way Charles Manson idolized The Beatles and Armeggedon, the way Heavens Gate truly believed that the world was ending, and the Aliens were ready to pick them up after they drank the poisoned kool aid. Therefore, because each religion idolizes something, by definition they are a cult. Where is the separation between Charles Manson and the Pope then? Truth is, besides the fact that Charles Manson helped the killings of some 35 people and abused drugs, there really is none. I’m not saying they are the same person, and I’m not comparing the actions of Charles Manson to that of the Pope, but in their respective cults(religions), they are an important figure. They hold the meaning of two very different ideas, but they are both leaders of a cult.

So, where does MAGA come in in all of this messy cult business. Now think about what MAGA stands for. MAGA is an abbreviation of the slogan Make America Great Again, a campaigning slogan used by the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. MAGA is also referred to and often used towards groups of Trump supporters .Many Trump rallies are called MAGA rallies. In many cases, during the Black Lives Matter protests, armed vigilantes in support of MAGA and white nationalist groups showed up to protect businesses and argued that Democrats have let lawless reign into the streets, to give an example of where the MAGA groups convene outside of Trump Rallies.  Take a look at the definition of a cult one last time, “a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object.” What or who does MAGA idolize? If a group of people Idolize someone or something, what can they be called by definition?

Not all cults are bad, and not all cults are good either. It is important to recognise and try our best to release the stigma of the word cult. It’s also crucial to recognize that all cults are so absorbed in their beliefs that anything they can conjure up, they can truly believe. In conclusion, all organized religion is a cult, including MAGA, and it is supported by every statement above, including definitions, and internet research.  My sources are below.
