A Slip of the Tongue

Maybe it was no more than

a slip of the tongue,

or an itch of the fingers

that brought those words to life;

and maybe those words

were never really meant.

Once spoken,

once read,

there’s no taking them back

for they’ve already taken up residence

inside my mind.

It’s possible that you never meant

to be unkind.

Too late to turn back now,

they can’t be retracted,

and from my mind

they will never be extracted.

Remember, it was you that fired

the first shot

and began this war of words;

don’t blame me if my aim

is truer than your own.

Oh so sadly true. Words cannot be taken back so we must be sure to share only the good ones. Then again....on the opposite side ... actions do speak louder than words. I dunno .... when in doubt ... don't shout it out! Another great poem Hull (may I call you Hull? I noticed others do). I'm one of your biggest fans!
