the first step back

Last night:
We welcomed back empathy
We welcomed back honor
We welcomed back class
We welcomed back respect
We welcomed back friendly
We welcomed back manners
We welcomed back learning,
From mistakes and books
We welcomed back science
We welcomed back admitting
You were wrong
We welcomed back equilibrium
We welcomed back the world
We welcomed back pride
We welcomed back normal

Going backward means to make previous mistakes. Instead, we need to move forward. What I mean by this is forward to a better place where lives matter no matter the color or creed. We need to move forward where we value this country and all the people who dwell here even if we do not agree with their ideology. We need to move forward and stop the backbiting, finger-pointing and help those who hurt but not by hurting someone else. We need to level the responsibility to be solvent morally, socially, economically and politically. We need to move forward to be leaders and not followers in basic education, in science, and in creativity to bind together what makes America the land of the free and home of the brave. Those who stand up to injustice wherever it stands is non-partisan. It is a basic human right. We need to bind together to create solutions all toward a better future where all have a place at the table and may find the strength and wisdom to hand off the reigns to future generations who hold true to the principles in which this country was founded while also being gracious enough to expand beyond this for the diversity of thought that make us world leaders.

I understand what you were feeling when you wrote this poem. I think, most importantly...come January...we can welcome back CALM. Welcome back Character. Welcome back honesty. Welcome back unity. We have a lot of work to do, but we will do it without insults, lies, and fear mongering. We are resilient. We will reUnite! Write On!
