Black Umbrella

Black coat, black umbrella,

hunkered down

and marching along

with a cloud of doom

and despondency

that’s beginning to get

the better of me.

Pause a while, cause a bit of a stir

for not to march

is to stop playing fair.

Let them walk around

for I’ve got the notion

to stick out my hand

and let the rain

come washing down.

Looking at my fingers, at my rain-drenched hand,

I’ve got to wonder...

why?

What’s so wrong with getting wet?

It’s only water

dripping down.

So I close it up,

that black umbrella,

and let the rain soak my hair,

slip down my face,

making those tears

not leave any trace.

And maybe that umbrella was a big black cloud

for without it

I walk that bit lighter,

feel that bit brighter.

Perhaps I should have held in

that smile

for those passers-by

are looking at me like I’ve lost the plot

whereas me,

I think I found it.

Thanks, Mike. No umbrellas for me, I prefer to get drenched by the rain than to struggle with one of those.

Thanks, LE. I don't own an umbrella and I never will.

Most people take the rain for granted. I like the message of finding joy in an unexpected place. Good poem hullabaloo.

This is a great poem! I especially love the way you painted this picture. I like the twist of having the umbrella be the problem and not the rain. Thank you for posting!

This was a bit of a personal piece. The truth is that I'd far rather get drenched than to ever use an umbrella. Thanks so much for reading.
