What place of half-night,

Is this that I have found?

Is the early drawing light,

upon the cold and drying ground,

the gift of something numinous—

breaking forth from darkened plains—

a maudlin melody from luminous

thoughts I thought again?

The vast and pale firmament!

Is out with sails unfurled—

out beside the permanent

star that cradles our world

is something quite unhappy—

Something I

can almost see

When the sun sets!
for me and you,

lay me down—

in the garden we grew.
