The Pretender

The smile comes easy, half smirk when I hear you jest, a full toothy grin when you say a pleasant word or when you introduce your best.

I shed a tear when you give me bad news, your unfortunate diagnosis or your pets early demise. I truly don’t care but you will never see through my disguise.

I am your best friend. I am your neighbor. I am the anonymous man in line that listens to your life story with all the right inflections—my eyes, blue and open, slam like steel doors when the grocer beckons.

When I’m home alone with pen and paper I search my mind’s eye’s  many cages. I pull out your words, thoughts, and wishes, then set the wheels a turning for you will forever be trapped in these pages.

Teethe? Teeth? Toothy? Anyway, minefields of commas aside, quite offbeat and thought-provoking. Thanks for the read.

You have done a great job writing out this Sad truth. I don't want to believe that people consciously pretend; they are just so involved in their own lives that they cannot make time to be involved enough to care about others. And ... most people don't want to hurt anyone. Write On!
